Bulgarian rose as an edible flower – what we have learned in 10 years
10 years of working with the Bulgarian rose as an edible flower – that’s how long it took us to accumulate the knowledge which helps us today to rethink the depth of the original idea behind Rosey’s Mark. Namely, to present the qualities of the Bulgarian oil-bearing rose damascena in food in the best possible way.
Little known and too eccentric for our friends and relatives in Bulgaria, surprising and interesting for our acquaintances outside the country – this is how our concept for a rose-based food brand sounded in 2012, carefully spelled out in a presentation of two newly graduated students with Masters in branding and international economic relations. Back then we started Rosey’s Mark under the motto “Floral gastronomy from Bulgaria”.
After ten years of evolution in the development of food products with roses and in the perceptions and trends in food, today we see the Bulgarian rose with an even more significant potential for development in modern nutrition. Not only because of its distinctive and delicate floral taste, but because of the surprisingly diverse health properties of rose damascena that we discover again and again over time. We are finding references and evidence for the possibilities of the rose as a functional food fragment by fragment. It’s hidden in the traditions of herbal medicine not only in Bulgaria, but also in other countries, also in Chinese medicine and in Ayurveda – the ancient Indian science of health and well-being. Modern scientific researches also examine and systematically prove the functional properties of rose damascena and of rose oil in areas such as anti-stress, digestion and a number of other health aspects.
It’s time for Rosey’s Mark – version 2.0
The rose and its role in functional nutrition – this new layer of meaning adds on without contradiction to our cause to present the rose as an edible flower in its best light. And so was born the upgraded version of Rosey’s Mark, in which, to the culinary possibilities of the fragrant rose, we add an additional emphasis on the diverse functional benefits of the oil-bearing rose flower. Benefits that are all related to the most common daily challenges of modern lifestyle, such as managing stress and anxiety, digestion health, immune system, maintaining beauty and youth.
Surprisingly multi-faceted benefits, some of which we have already identified and experienced personally in the various rose-based food products we’ve created by far. The rose jam and its ability to activate peristalsis, which our customers in Bulgaria say they know about from their grandmothers. Rose tea with its calming properties, deriving alongside rose oil’s highly valued properties in aromatherapy as the most powerful anti-depressant and anti-stress aroma among essential oils. Rose water with its high rose oil content working for beauty and youth in cosmetics and its ability to work for health and beauty from the inside out too, through daily consumption as a supplement to our daily dose of water.
So today at Rosey’s Mark we are taking a deep look in yet another direction. Beyond floral taste itself, towards the discovery of all the benefits that Bulgarian rose can bring to our daily well-being. And in the most sustainable and gentle way we can think of – using the Bulgarian rose as a functional ingredient in food.
